During my childhood, my maternal grandfather, who lived in Germany, played a key role in shaping the adult I would become. Passionate about art, an eternal child and an adventurer, he passed on to me a part of his madness, which I sought to evoke through these personal and introspective photographs.
They reflect an important tradition from my region, Alsace, as well as from my grandfather’s, the Black Forest: the carnival, or, as it is called there, Fastnacht.
The frightening masks of Fastnacht, inspired by local folklore, often depict demons, witches, or fantastical creatures. They were used to mock the Church, their fears, and the authorities.

Durant mon enfance, mon grand-père maternel, qui vivait en Allemagne, a joué un rôle important dans le développement de l’adulte que j’allais devenir. Passionné d’art, éternel enfant et aventurier, il m’a transmis une part de sa folie, que j’ai cherché à évoquer à travers ces clichés, personnels et introspectifs.

On y retrouve une tradition importante de ma région, l’Alsace, ainsi que de celle de mon grand-père, la Forêt-Noire : le carnaval, ou, comme on l’appelle chez lui, le Fastnacht.

Les masques effrayants du Fastnacht, inspirés du folklore local, représentent souvent des démons, sorcières ou créatures fantastiques. Ils servaient à se moquer de l’Église, de leurs peurs et des autorités.
